Following the Government’s announcement on Monday of a 4 week pause to Step 3 of the Roadmap out of Lockdown, the planned events for Golowan 2021 will be seriously reduced.
Due to the continued restrictions beyond 21 June in an effort to address the serious rise in the incidence of the Delta Covid-19 variant, and having taken the expert advice of the Festival’s Health & Safety specialists, the organisers of the Golowan Festival have, with a heavy heart, been obliged to seriously limit events this year.
The disappointing news is that all ‘crowd-pleasing’ live music in public spaces – Greenmarket Car Park, The Acorn Theatre Steps, Penzance Promenade and Morrab Gardens Bandstand will not now take place.
Similarly, the food and craft stalls in Greenmarket Car Park and the children’s activities – Kids on the Prom – on Quay Fair Day will also be shelved this time round.
All is not lost! – events that will be taking place:
‘Golowan Down The Years’ Exhibition
The former Argos store in Wharfside Shopping Centre is currently (right up until 27 June) housing an outstanding exhibition.
‘Golowan Down The Years’ not only celebrates 30 fantastic years of Golowan since its 1991 revival, but also examines its ancient roots in the fire and frolics of Penzance and its people in times gone by.
The exhibition is free but you need to book a time slot in advance:
Fireworks
On Mazey Eve – Friday 25 June – the harbour will again erupt in another fabulous Golowan Firework Display!
Morrab Gardens
In Morrab Gardens, on Mazey Day and Quay Fair (Saturday 26 & Sunday 27 June), the energy and enthusiasm of the young people of the town – from schools, colleges and community groups – will be rewarded with a colourful display on a ‘Serpent Trail’ through the gardens.
The wonderful ‘parade’ images, sculpted from willow withies, paint and paper, that they have been beavering away to create for your enjoyment and appreciation, will be on display.
Entrance to the Gardens will be via the gate on St Mary’s Terrace which will be carefully monitored in the interests of public safety.
The Acorn
The Acorn Theatre are hosting a Golowan Fundraising music celebration on Tuesday 22 June.
Tickets are £10 and selling fast!
The Golowan Team had wanted to do so much more for the town and local community this year but the health and safety of residents will always be our first priority.
The Team invite you to enjoy what is on offer in the sure and certain knowledge that – with the support of you all – the Golowan Festival will bounce back bigger and better than ever in 2022!
