Penzance Jewish Cemetery

A Hidden Gem – One of only twenty five early to mid-eighteenth century Jewish cemeteries outside of London

We look after the Penzance Jewish Cemetery, located between Leskinnick Terrace and Mount Street. We also work closely with Penlee House staff who supervise maintenance works to ensure the site’s heritage is protected.

History of the cemetery

The cemetery is one of the best-preserved Jewish cemeteries, established in the eighteenth century, outside of London.

It was originally established around 1740 on what was a plot of open land. The land was owned by Canon Rogers of Sithney who wanted to encourage the Jewish community to settle in the town.

The cemetery today

Penzance Jewish Cemetery is Grade II listed. This means that the cemetery has been recognised by Historic England as having special architectural and historic interest. The listing also brings the cemetery under the consideration of the planning system, so that it can be protected for future generations.

You can find out more information about the listing on the Historic England website.
