Plastic Free Penzance

We are working closely with Plastic Free Penzance to continue to minimise our town’s contribution to plastic pollution.

Plastic Free Coastline Status

In 2017, Penzance became the first town in the UK to achieve the Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) Plastic Free Coastline status.

What does Plastic Free Status mean?

To achieve ‘Plastic Free Status’ the town had to meet five key targets set by SAS:

  • Strategic – Penzance Council committing to tackling single use plastics at a strategic level
  • Business – Lobbying and encouraging local businesses to ban single use plastics or switch to sustainable alternatives
  • Communities – Engaging with and encouraging other communities, groups and organisations to take action on single use plastics.
  • Education – Rolling out ‘Plastic Free Schools’ across our town
  • Positive action – Holding beach cleans, fundraisers and other awareness raising events.

Meeting these targets demonstrates our community’s commitment to improving our environment and has raised the profile of our town on the international stage. We are committed to continuing this good work for the benefit of everyone within the parish.

Plastic Free Event Charter

As part of our wider Climate Emergency Plan, we have adopted a Plastic Free Event Charter for all events that we organise and support.

All groups that receive grant funding from us are requested to adopt the principles of our Plastic Free Event Charter. We need to raise awareness and ensure that we continue to fight plastic pollution in our community.
