Mousehole

Mousehole

“The loveliest village in England” – Dylan Thomas.

Mousehole (pronounced Mowzel) is a small fishing village situated just over three miles south of Penzance. It was once a busy harbour, famous for landing huge catches of Pilchards. The village has kept much of its historic character and today is very popular with visitors during the summer.

The Solomon Browne Memorial Hall is a renovated old Net Loft in the heart of the village. It is a central point for the community to meet, learn about our unique heritage here in Mousehole, and take part in the many events

The Mousehole Christmas Lights are famous throughout Cornwall and beyond and are put up (and taken down) each year by a dedicated team of volunteers. Tom Bawcock’s Eve (23 December) is always celebrated with great enthusiasm in the village; it celebrates the efforts of Tom Bawcock, the legendary Mousehole fisherman, who is said to have saved the villagers from starvation by going out in a severe storm to fish.

The biennial Sea Salts & Sail Festival celebrates the village’s maritime history and welcomes locals and visitors alike. The festival is planned by a team of over ninety volunteers from the village community.
