This is your chance to celebrate members of the community who make a real difference and go the extra mile!
Penzance Council is excited to announce that nominations for the Brian Spiegelhalter Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year Awards 2026 are now open! Celebrating members of the community who make a real difference, the awards shine a light on the pride of Penzance Parish and those who go the extra mile.
Now in their 23rd year, the Awards were started in 2003 by the late Brian Spiegelhalter of B.J. Spiegelhalter & Son, and former Mayor of Penzance, to celebrate the work and achievements of local people and their important contributions to the community.
Mark Spiegelhalter commented:
“These awards celebrate the people who go the extra mile for others in our community. It’s a wonderful way to honour my late father’s legacy while recognising the dedication and kindness that makes Penzance such a special place.”
Nominations can be made for someone who has gone the extra mile in the past 12 months to help the community, or for an individual whose selfless actions have improved the lives of others. There is also a Young Citizen of the Year Award for a community champion under the age of 18.
Penzance Council Town Clerk James Hardy said:
“We are always lucky to have so many worthy candidates for the Brian Spiegelhalter Citizen of the Year Awards, and we again hope to get a large number of nominations from across the Parish.
“These awards are an opportunity to highlight the invaluable contribution of so many volunteers within our community, celebrating their roles as part of the Annual Mayor Choosing Ceremony.”

• Citizen of the Year (aged 18 and over)
• Young Citizen of the Year (aged under 18)

Selection panel to choose winners
Many people and organisations who do valuable work in the community have no online or social media presence. So, to ensure a level playing field, we seek nominations from the public, which then go to a panel for a final decision to be made.
The panel will be made up of the Town Mayor, the Town Clerk and a representative of B.J. Spiegelhalter & Son.
Awards Ceremony
Once chosen, the winners will be invited to the Annual Council Meeting in May at St John’s Hall, Penzance and will be presented with their awards by the Mayor of Penzance.
The winners will also be invited to the Mayor’s Reception, which will take place immediately after the ceremony.
