Penzance VE Day 75

Published: 28th February 2020 in category: Events

Help us mark VE Day 75.

We are incredibly proud of the role played by people living and working in our parish during the Second World War and will be holding a series of special events to mark the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day on 8 May.

8 May 1945 marked the official end of World War 2 when the world could finally celebrate the promise of peace and start the long recovery from over 5 years of devastating war.  (VJ Day – Victory over Japan – followed on 15 August 1945).

The Government has designated 8 May 2020 as a Bank Holiday, with events being held to mark this historical occasion throughout the country and the Commonwealth. We will be organising a range of events to celebrate the day in our parish and hope as many local people as possible will take part.

At 11 am on the morning of Friday 8 May, there will be a Service of Commemoration held in the Memorial Garden of Penlee Park. The service will remember all those who lost their lives during the conflict and give thanks for those who survived. Representatives of local military organisations will be in attendance and all members of the public are very welcome to come along and take part in the service.

In the afternoon there will be an afternoon of forties-themed entertainment taking place in and around the bandstand in Morrab Gardens, with cream teas being served from Pengarth Day Centre.

“We are still working on the organisation of these events and will be publishing further details nearer the time “said Councillor Nicole Broadhurst, Mayor of Penzance.  “We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who remembers VE Day and would like to be present at one or both of these events so we can send them a special invitation”.

Anyone who knows of a resident who remembers the historic events of 1945 and would like to be involved is asked to contact Teresa Fogarty at Penzance Council by calling 01736 363405 or emailing [email protected]
