Penzance Promenade Banners are back for summer 2021

28th May 2021 in Council News, Penzance

The popular and iconic banners that usually adorn Penzance Promenade each summer are making a comeback for the 2021 summer season this Bank Holiday Weekend!

Last year was the first time the silk banners, which have become synonymous with Penzance in recent times, were not flown as Cormac carried out extensive renovation works to the Duchy’s only Victorian promenade.

Contrary to popular belief, the banners which are flown on the Promenade and throughout the town, are organised and funded by Penzance Council for residents and visitors alike to enjoy during the summer months.

Each year local artists are commissioned to design and create the brightly coloured silk banners and a local company is contracted to install them.

“I’m excited to see the banners in place and flying on the new poles!” said local artist Lucy Birbeck who designed this year’s Promenade flags.

“This year the banners had to be much smaller as the new poles are closer to the street lamps and string lighting along the Prom.

“The designs celebrate the work of those people who have been at the front line of the pandemic, protecting our local community at great personal risk.”

This year, the arrival of the banners along the newly opened Promenade, which is owned by Cornwall Council, will be a welcome sight to so many after what has been such a challenging time.

“The refurbishment of Penzance Promenade has been a long time in the making but the installation of the banners for the 2021 summer season indicate that we’ve finally arrived” said Cllr Jonathan How, Mayor of Penzance.

“The new arrangement means more banners than ever. The vibrant colours are amazing and I can’t wait to see how they look now that there’s a better spread over the full length of the Prom.”

We would would like to thank Cornwall Council for granting permission for the summer banners to be flown from their newly installed flagpoles.

Due to the exposed coastal location, if winds are gusting above 35mph, the banners will need to be temporarily lowered. This is on the recommendation of the flagpole manufacturer to protect the integrity of the poles and will also prevent accidental damage to the fabric of the promenade.

The town banners will also be installed this weekend to provide the main shopping streets with a splash of colour. This year’s town banners have been designed and created by local artist Liz Tyrrell.

We would also like to thank local businesses for granting permission for the summer banners to be flown from their premises in the town and continuing to support this fantastic initiative each year.
