The Mayor of Penzance has picked four winning designs from local school pupils in the parish who created designs this year based on the theme “I’m dreaming of a Cornish Christmas”.
After an invitation went out to all schools in the parish, entries were received from Newlyn School, St Mary’s Catholic Primary, Pensans CP School, and St Mary’s C of E Primary.
From 100 entries, the Mayor whittled it down to four: one winner from each of the four schools who entered the competition.
“I am thrilled with the fantastic response we have had from schools in the parish – with 100 entries!” said Cllr Nicole Broadhurst, Mayor of Penzance.
“It was wonderful to see the range and sheer inventiveness of all the designs. This has been a challenging year, so it was fantastic to see the Christmas card entries bursting with joy!”
The winners of the Mayor’s Christmas Card Competition 2020 are:
- Elissa-Jade Nicholas from Newlyn School
- Jayden Warren from Pensans CP School
- Freya Elsworth from St Mary’s C of E School
- Deina Lasakauskaite from St Mary’s Catholic Primary School

Isabel Stephens, Headteacher at Newlyn School, said: “The children were excited to enter the Mayor’s Christmas Card competition and were inspired by the theme, ‘I’m dreaming of a Cornish Christmas’.”
The four winning designs have been turned into cards that will be sent from the Mayor of Penzance across the Duchy and beyond, as far away as Nevada City in California, to schools, community organisations, parish councillors, and the armed forces.
Additionally, each winner will be receiving a fully stocked art box and a personal letter from the Mayor.
“We are very pleased that the Mayor’s Christmas Card Competition is running again this year, drawing our community together” said Hilary Tyreman, Headteacher at St Mary’s C of E Primary School.
“Our children enjoyed the opportunity to take part and we are overjoyed to have a winner!”
Due to continuing Covid-19 restrictions, the Mayor will be recording a video message to thank all the children who entered the competition. You can also watch a video montage of all the designs below and on our Facebook page.
