Initial actions agreed by Councillors following Newlyn residents survey

At its Full Council meeting on 31 October, Penzance Councillors unanimously agreed on initial actions to take based on survey responses from residents in Newlyn.

The survey was carried out earlier this year, with all households in Newlyn receiving a paper survey through the post and the option to respond online. Over 540 responses have been received, which represents over 27% of households, to questions including: would you like to see allotment plots in Newlyn?

Allotments

The majority of residents were in favour of allotments being supplied in the area and a number of potential sites were suggested.

Councillors agreed that investigations will be made to identify suitable allotment land within the Newlyn area and approach landowners to discuss potential leasing costs. At the meeting, Councillors heard that a number of people already share their gardens with others to grow their own food. Councillors also agreed that investigations take place to consider the feasibility of adopting a scheme where Penzance Council matches willing garden owners with people who might wish to grow food on part of their plot.

Parking

A significant number of residents also stated that parking was the most significant issue facing residents in the village.

When discussing the survey results ahead of the Full Council meeting, Newlyn Ward Councillors did identify that while residents’ parking schemes were often supported in principle, some residents would simply not be able to afford to pay for a permit to benefit from such a scheme, particularly in the current cost of living crisis.

Penzance Council has no responsibility for roads and parking provision, but Councillors agreed to lobby Cornwall Council to identify free and effective parking solutions for residents in the area.

Thank you

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents of Newlyn for engaging in our survey and we hope to be able to report on the agreed actions in the near future.
