Penzance announces bid to become first UK Town of Culture

Penzance has thrown its tricorn hat into the ring, announcing that it is bidding to become the first UK Town of Culture.

Inspired by the success of the UK City of Culture, the new UK Town of Culture competition launched by the Department of Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) aims to shine a spotlight on the unique contributions towns make to the national story.

Home to painters, playwrights, poets and pirates, Penzance has been described as the ‘cultural capital of Cornwall’ with creativity running through the veins of the market town’s long and colourful history.

Towns across the United Kingdom have until 31 March 2026 to submit an expression of interest for the competition, after which short-listed entries will be invited to develop a more detailed bid. The winning town will be awarded £3 million to deliver a cultural programme in 2028, whilst category finalists will receive £250,000 each to deliver elements of their bid.

Recognised by Creative England for its creative industries and famous for its cultural events such as Golowan Festival and Montol Festival, Penzance is an obvious contender, competing against other Cornish entries including Falmouth, Newquay, Helston and Redruth in a bid to become the first UK Town of Culture.

Penzance’s bid to deliver a nationally significant programme for Town of Culture 2028 will build on the town’s culturally-rich offering – already renowned for its mix of art, music, food, theatre, community and tradition.

Penzance translates from the Cornish ‘Pennsans’ meaning ‘Holy Head’ originating from the headland at Battery Rocks. To this day, it is still symbolically represented with the patron saint of Penzance, St John the Baptist’s head on a plate, as depicted on the Mayoral Chain, Town Seal and featured on the historic Market House and a number of key buildings across Penzance.

Bidding for the UK Town of Culture will be an opportunity for Penzance to showcase its unique culture, creativity and communities. And whilst competition is expected to be fierce, with entries from right across the UK, only one town comes to the table with a head on a plate.
