Phil was a committed town councillor for 12 years and was first elected back in 2005 for Central Ward as a Mebyon Kernow councillor. He also served as a Councillor for the former Penwith District Council between 2002 and 2004 and was involved with the Declaration for a Cornish Assembly campaign. He was later elected as Mayor of Penzance from 2012-2014.

During his time on Penzance Council, Phil served as Chair and Vice-Chair of both the Planning and General Purposes Committees. He also represented the Council on various outside bodies, including the Penzance Civic Society, Friends of Penlee House, Association of Larger Local Councils in Cornwall, Penzance-Concarneau Twining Association, Penzance-Cuxhaven Twinning Association, Penzance, St Just, Bendigo & Nevada City Twinning Association, Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Penzance Welfare Trust, Golowan Steering Group, Neighbourhoods Together, Penzance Chamber of Commerce, Penzance Town Team, and the Friends of the Jewish Cemetery.

Phil became a Bard of Grosedh Kernow in 2000 taking the bardic name Baneroniethor which translates as Vexillologist, or a person who studies flags. He was also very involved with Penzance Old Cornwall Society for many years.

Current Mayor of Penzance Stephen Reynolds, commented:

“Many of us here in Penzance, and further afield across Kernow, will be sad to hear of the passing of our former Mayor Phil Rendle. Not only did he serve his local community as a very active and engaged councillor for many years, he was also a doughty campaigner and passionate advocate for the ongoing cause of increased self-determination for the people of Kernow. He will be missed.”

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.
