Newlyn to host new Eco-Reef pilot

Published: 1st February 2021 in category: Newlyn

Newlyn has been selected as a pilot for a new Eco-Reef to trial a nature-based solution to coastal defences

The pilot is being lead by the Environment Agency as part of a wider project called Sustainable and Resilient Coastal Cities (SARCC), part of the European-funded Interreg 2 Seas programme.

The project will extend the existing breakwater using custom-made blocks to promote marine organism colonisation.

The blocks will be made with granite by-products from a local quarry, to promote a circular economy and keep carbon emissions to a minimum.

The overall aim of the SARCC project is to increase knowledge, awareness and uptake of nature-based solutions (NBS) for coastal defences and management.

This is fantastic news for the community of Newlyn and is another step on the road to tackling the climate emergency.
