Holocaust Memorial Day 2021

Published: 27th January 2021 in category: Events

27th January marks Holocaust Memorial Day and Penzance Council encourages all residents in the parish, of all faiths and backgrounds, to join in a collective act of remembrance.

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) takes place year on 27th January – which marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

The day is an opportunity to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi Persecution and in genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2021 is Be the light in the darkness. People across the country are encouraged to put a candle in their window at 8pm to reflect on the depths humanity can sink to but also the ways individuals and communities resisted that darkness.

Truro Cathedral are holding their own candle lighting ceremony online at 1pm today.

You can find out more about Holocaust Memorial Day by visiting the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust website.
