The Mayor of Penzance, Stephen Reynolds has given a Christmas message that celebrates those who shine a light in our communities.
In his message, the mayor said: “It’s once again that time of year when people come together to mark the turning of the seasons –the triumph of light over dark, as the days start to lengthen again and the darkness begins to retreat.
“From the fiery flames of Montol to the star of Bethlehem or the Hannukah candles, we celebrate light shining in the darkness. And here in Penzance, we celebrate our very own Humphry Davy, with young people from our schools holding lanterns aloft as they parade in honour of the local lad who brought light to the darkness of the mines with his invention of the safety lamp.”

Cllr Stephen Reynolds continued: “Our local communities are also shining their own light on us this festive season. From Mousehole to Gulval, Newlyn to Heamoor, Treneere to Penzance itself, each community has its own special display, and its own special band of volunteers who raise funds, fix broken kit, and put the lights up and take them down – whatever the weather. But wherever the lights go on, the mood is the same: a mood of togetherness, of belonging, celebrating who we are and where we live. The very young, the very old, and everyone in between, coming together in companionship in a riot of song, light, and silly hats and jumpers.
“In what can seem like a dark world, it is so important that cherish the light that shines so strong in this wonderful place we call home. And amidst the warmth, the joy and the light, it’s important too that we remember those in our midst who are lonely, isolated, hungry or fearful; and that we support and nurture the amazing people in our community who reach out to help them through their dark times.
“So, as the Christmas lights shine bright in our streets and our homes, let us hope that as the New Year rolls around we can keep that light shining, with compassion in our hearts and a spring in our step.”
Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, the Mayor of Penzance added: “Nadelik Lowen ha Bledhen Nowydh Da, Onen Hag Oll. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to One and All.”
