Do you know someone who makes a real difference in your local area? Nominate them for the Penzance Citizens of the Year Awards 2023!

Penzance Citizens Awards 2023

We are very pleased to announce that nominations for the Brian Spiegelhalter Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year Awards are now open!

The Awards were started in 2003 by the late Brian Spiegelhalter (previous Mayor of Penzance) of B.J. Spiegelhalter & Son to celebrate the work of local people and their important contributions to our Parish community.

“Greater voluntary participation by everybody in the community is the future” said Cllr Jonathan How, Mayor of Penzance.

“It makes people happier; it improves mental and physical wellbeing; and it reduces loneliness. We’re looking for the people who are really ahead of the curve on this one and celebrate the work they are doing which is making a real difference.”

Nominations

Penzance Council are now looking for nominations for the following awards:

  • Citizen of the Year (aged 18 and over)
  • Young Citizen of the Year (aged under 18)

Nominations can be made by anyone living, working or studying in the Parish of Penzance for a wide range of activities, including (but not limited to): community service, volunteering, charity work, outstanding achievements, and local environmental action.

Nomination forms (and the awards criteria) are available on our website or from the Council Offices at the Penlee Centre in Penlee Park.

Closing date for nominations – 5pm, Thursday 30 March 2023.

Public Vote

Last year was the first time in the Awards’ history that the winners were chosen by you – the public! And this year we will again be holding a public vote so people in the community can choose their winners.

If you are planning to nominate someone, you must first obtain their consent to be included in an online poll (for under 18s, a parent/carer must also provide consent) – details can be found on the nomination form and awards criteria.

Awards Ceremony

Once chosen, the winners will be invited to the Annual Town Council on Tuesday 9 May at St John’s Hall, Penzance and will be presented with their Awards by the newly elected Mayor of Penzance.

The winners will also be invited to the Mayor’s Reception in the Trafalgar Room of The Union Hotel, Penzance which will take place immediately after the ceremony.
