Brian Spiegelhalter Citizens Awards 2024 - nominations now open!

Do you know someone who makes a real difference in your local area? We want to celebrate the people that went the extra mile in the last twelve months for our Parish!

We are excited to announce that nominations for the Brian Spiegelhalter Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year Awards 2024 are now open!

“We are proud to announce the continuation of the Brian Spiegelhalter Citizen of the Year Awards, a prestigious recognition dedicated to honouring outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to our community” said Mark Spiegelhalter.

“Named in memory of my late father, Brian Spiegelhalter, a beloved figure renowned for his unwavering commitment to community service during his time as Mayor and on the Penzance Town Council. These awards aim to celebrate and perpetuate his legacy of kindness, compassion, and dedication to others.”

The Awards were started in 2003 by the late Brian Spiegelhalter of B.J. Spiegelhalter & Son to celebrate the work of local people and their important contributions to our Parish community. 2024 marks the Awards’ 21st anniversary and we are hoping to get lots of nominations for this year!

“In my time as Mayor I’ve become aware of just how many people in our community – many of them unsung heroes – go the extra mile to help others, in so many ways” said Cllr Stephen Reynolds, Mayor of Penzance.

“These awards are an opportunity for two of these community heroes to share the limelight at the Annual Mayor Choosing Ceremony, while also highlighting the invaluable contribution of volunteers to community life in the Penzance parish.”

Return to selection panel

Many people and organisations who do valuable work in the community have no online or social media presence. So, to ensure a level playing field, we are moving away from an online vote and reverting to the traditional method of seeking nominations from the public, which will then go to a panel for a final decision to be made.

The panel will be made up of the Town Mayor, Deputy Town Mayor, Chairs of the Council’s Committees and a representative of B.J. Spiegelhalter & Son, with support from the Town Clerk.

Awards Ceremony

Once chosen, the winners will be invited to the Annual Town Council on Tuesday 7 May at St John’s Hall, Penzance and will be presented with their awards by the Town Mayor.

The winners will also be invited to the Mayor’s Reception at The Exchange Gallery, Penzance which will take place immediately after the ceremony.
