Celebrating members of the community who make a real difference, the awards shine a light on the pride of Penzance Parish

Penzance Council is excited to announce that nominations for the Brian Spiegelhalter Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year Awards 2025 are now open. Celebrating members of the community who make a real difference, the awards shine a light on the pride of Penzance Parish.

Now in their 22nd year, the Awards were started in 2003 by the late Brian Spiegelhalter of B.J. Spiegelhalter & Son to celebrate achievements of local people and their important contributions to the community.

Mark Spiegelhalter commented:

“We are honoured to continue this award in memory of my late father, whose steadfast dedication to the local community created a lasting legacy. This initiative preserves his values of compassion and public service whilst recognising outstanding individuals who make a meaningful difference in our local community.”

Nominations can be made for someone who has gone the extra mile in the past 12 months to help the community, or for an individual whose selfless actions have improved the lives of others. There is also a Young Citizen of the Year Award for a community champion under the age of 18.

Penzance Council Town Clerk James Hardy said:

“We are lucky to have so many worthy candidates in the parish for the Brian Spiegelhalter Citizen of the Year Awards, and we hope to get lots of nominations this year to reflect this.

“These awards are an opportunity for two of these community heroes to share the limelight at the Annual Mayor Choosing Ceremony, whilst also highlighting the invaluable contribution of volunteers to community life.”

Nominations

Penzance Council are now looking for nominations for the following awards:

  • Citizen of the Year (aged 18 and over)
  • Young Citizen of the Year (aged under 18)

Nominations can be made by anyone living, working or studying in the Parish of Penzance for a wide range of activities, including (but not limited to): community service, volunteering, charity work, outstanding achievements, and local environmental action.

Please read the Awards Criteria before making your nomination (hard copies are also available from our offices in Penlee Park)

(Hard-copy nomination forms are also available at the Penzance Council offices)

Closing date for nominations: 12 noon on Monday 7 April 2025.

Selection panel to choose winners

Many people and organisations who do valuable work in the community have no online or social media presence. So, to ensure a level playing field, we seek nominations from the public, which then go to a panel for a final decision to be made.

The panel will be made up of the Town Mayor, the Town Clerk and a representative of B.J. Spiegelhalter & Son.

Awards Ceremony

Once chosen, the winners will be invited to the Annual Council Meeting on Monday 19 May at St John’s Hall, Penzance and will be presented with their awards by the Mayor of Penzance.

The winners will also be invited to the Mayor’s Reception, which will take place immediately after the ceremony.
