The Penzance Community Toilet Scheme is back!

22nd April 2022 in Community Toilets, Local News, Services

The Penzance Community Toilet Scheme is back with an improved new look and facilities across the Parish available to everyone for free!

So what’s the big deal?

The Covid-19 pandemic has made everyone realise how important access to public toilets are. As a result, many businesses also stepped up to provide clean and accessible facilities for their customers.

What are we doing as a Council?

We took over the running of 6 public toilets in Penzance from Cornwall Council in 2016 to make sure that they would stay open.

Since then, we have invested over £50,000 to improve the facilities and we have employed a local company to keep them clean.

Last year we also took on the Newlyn public toilets from the Newlyn Harbour Authority and we’ve already had positive feedback about the improvements we’ve made. At the January 2022 Full Council meeting, Councillors agreed to invest £16,000 to refurbish the facilities once the lease is officially drawn up with the Harbour Authority.

But that’s not all!

We were one of the first Town Councils in Cornwall to introduce a Community Toilet Scheme.

Everyone deserves to have access to toilet facilities which are safe and clean – it’s that simple!

What is a ‘Community Toilet’?

In a nutshell, they are clean and accessible toilet facilities in the community which are free for everyone to use.

The Penzance Community Toilet Scheme has been developed in partnership with local community-focused businesses to help boost our existing public toilet services.

There’s a big range of opening hours and the facilities are located across the Parish of Penzance (including Newlyn, Heamoor, and Gulval) at local cafes, pubs, restaurants, and art galleries.

Do I need to pay?

NO!

All the businesses taking part in the scheme receive funding from us so you don’t need to spend a penny!

Where are the Community Toilets?

We currently have 13 Community Toilets across the Parish, including Penzance, Newlyn, Heamoor and Gulval.

How to find them:

1. Look out for this sign which our partner businesses will have displayed in their window:

2. Pick up one of our leaflets with a handy map from our Reception or download one here:

We would like to extend the scheme to include Mousehole so are especially interested in hearing from businesses in the village who would like to join.
