We are set to host the town’s first virtual Mayor Choosing live on Facebook from 7pm on Tuesday 18th May 2021.
Also known as the Annual Town Council meeting, Mayor Choosing is when the new Mayor of the town is officially voted in by their fellow Councillors and takes up their civic office.
Additionally, the Deputy Mayor, Civic Deputies, Mace Bearers, and the Town Crier are also sworn in.
Historically, the meeting is our most popular civic event of the year with the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Civic Deputies, Town Clerk, Mace Bearers, and Town Crier all dressed in their civic regalia and special guests and residents of the Parish are invited to St John’s Hall.
The Mayor normally presents a number of awards including: the Brian Spiegelhalter Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year Awards, the Humphry Davy Prize, and the Mayor’s Cadets.
Award winners from 2019
A reception and buffet are usually held after the meeting with all catering provided by the talented Professional Cookery Students from the Senara Restaurant at Penwith College.
Due to the current Covid restrictions, we have taken the difficult decision not to present awards or hold a reception this year. The meeting itself will be very simplified and held outside in the Penlee Open Air Theatre and livestreamed on Facebook.
Members of public are encouraged to watch the meeting online (our Facebook is public so login is not required). There will be some capacity for a very small number to attend in person on the night on a first-come-first-served basis.
All those attending must adhere to social distancing rules and will need to either scan the QR code or provide their contact details as part of the Government’s Track and Trace system.
