Drive-through centres that will be administrating the seasonal flu vaccine are being set up at three confirmed sites across the Duchy. Volunteers are needed on-site and to take telephone bookings.
The complications of having both active flu and COVID in the population are unknown; the symptoms for both viruses are similar. To help reduce the risk of overwhelming the NHS there needs to be a good uptake of the seasonal flu vaccine this year.
The vaccine offer is being extended this year to more groups to help ensure more people are protected. The bulk of flu vaccinations usually take place in GP surgeries and for many people this will remain in place.
To help take the pressure off GP surgeries a pilot programme has been developed to run three (possibly more) drive-thru vaccination centres. The confirmed sites are:
- Stithians Showground
- The Eden Project
- The Royal Cornwall Showground
Bookings will be online, and vaccinations will begin from 1 October 2020 for those aged 65+ and then for those aged 50+ from November.
Volunteers are needed to support the call centre to take bookings for patients who do not have access to the internet – the call centre will be based in Truro and will operate Monday – Friday 8am-1pm.
Volunteers are also needed on-site to meet & greet patients at check-in, marshal patients around the site and check up on patients post-vaccine.
Clinicians will perform the vaccinations, there will on-site wellbeing facilities, and all COVID-safe procedures followed. There will be no close contact with patients and the vaccinations will take place outside on the fresh air.
